The Arroyo Seco

The Arroyo Seco translates to “dry gulch” in Spanish and was named by traveller Gaspar de Portola. The land was first populated by the Hahamong’na Tribe in Tongve Native Americans, who lived along the edge, where oak groves provided acorn for food and the vision of the surrounding San Gabriel Mountains waterfall. A river is carried from near Mount Wilson through the Arroyo and after some time into the Pacific Ocean, creating a lush urban forest in Pasadena that feels a world away. Admiringly known by Pasadena locals as the “the Arroyo”, the rich, attractive, multiterrian ecosystem has 22 miles of trails that connect the Angeles National Forest with South Pasadena.
